Tuesday Morning Devotion
Feast of St. Bartholomew
Psalm 86
Bow down thine ear, O Lord, and hear me *
for I am poor, and in misery.
Preserve thou my soul, for I am holy *
my God, save thy servant that putteth his trust in thee.
Be merciful unto me, O Lord *
for I will call daily upon thee.
Comfort the soul of thy servant *
for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
For thou, Lord, art good and gracious *
and of great mercy unto all them that call upon thee.
Give ear, Lord, unto my prayer *
and ponder the voice of my humble desires.
In the time of my trouble I will call upon thee *
for thou hearest me.
Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord *
there is not one that can do as thou doest.
All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship thee, O Lord *
and shall glorify thy Name.
For thou art great, and doest wondrous things *
thou art God alone.
Teach me thy way, O Lord, and I will walk in thy truth *
O knit my heart unto thee, that I may fear thy Name.
I will thank thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart *
and will praise thy Name for evermore.
For great is thy mercy toward me *
and thou hast delivered my soul from the nethermost hell.
O God, the proud are risen against me *
and the congregations of naughty men have sought after my soul, and have not set thee before their eyes.
But thou, O Lord God, art full of compassion and mercy *
long-suffering, plenteous in goodness and truth.
O turn thee then unto me, and have mercy upon me *
give thy strength unto thy servant, and help the son of thine handmaid.
Shew some token upon me for good, that they who hate me may see it, and be ashamed *
because thou, Lord, hast holpen me, and comforted me.

A Reading
(Genesis 28:10-17)
And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.
And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.
And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

Canticle
Benedictus Dominus Deus
Luke 1:68-79
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, *
for he hath visited and redeemed his people;
And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us *
in the house of his servant David,
As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, *
which have been since the world began:
That we should be saved from our enemies, *
and from the hand of all that hate us;
To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers, *
and to remember his holy covenant;
To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham, *
that he would give us,
That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies *
might serve him without fear,
In holiness and righteousness before him, *
all the days of our life.
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest, *
for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
To give knowledge of salvation unto his people *
for the remission of their sins,
Through the tender mercy of our God, *
whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us;
To give light to them that sit in darkness
and in the shadow of death, *
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Prayers for Ourselves and Neighbors
Almighty and everliving God, I pray unto Thee for thy Universal Church and all her members, past, present and yet to come:
Silence or add individual intentions here
Christ, the ruler of all the nations, I pray for the health and well-being of my nation and all the nations and leaders of the earth:
Silence or add individual intentions here
God, the Holy Ghost, I pray Thee to be poured out upon all who are sick and suffering in body, mind, or spirit, that Thy healing grace may be infused in them and in myself:
Silence or add individual intentions here
Heavenly Father, I commend unto Thee those who are departed, that they may be judged with magnanimity and see Thy Heavenly Kingdom:
Silence or add individual intentions here
And now, I gather my all prayers in the words Thy Son hath taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
Collect for St. Bartholomew
O Almighty and everlasting God, who didst give to thine apostle Bartholomew grace truly to believe and to preach thy Word: Grant, we beseech thee, that thy Church love what he believed and to preach what he taught; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
